Parity

Parity refers the number of times a woman has previously given birth.

According to the Better Outcomes Registry & Network (BORN) for 2016, 43.9% (42.6% 45.3%) of new mothers in Simcoe Muskoka were nulliparous (no previous births). Approximately one-third (35.2% (33.9%, 36.5%)) had given birth once previously, and 14.0% (13.0%, 14.9%) had given birth twice before. Only 6.9% (6.2%, 7.6%) of new mothers had previously given birth three or more times.  

Similarly, in Ontario overall, 42.1% (41.8%, 42.3%) of new mothers were nulliparous, 34.5% (34.3%, 34.8%) had given birth once previously, and 15.1% (14.9%, 15.3%) had given birth twice previously. Just over 8% (8.3% (8.2%, 8.5%)) of new mothers in Ontario had previously given birth three or more times.

Unsurprisingly, older women were more likely to have given birth previously, with 18.0% (15.6%, 20.6%) of women 35 to 49 years old having given birth 3 or more times, compared to 5.3% of women aged 25-34 (4.6%, 6.1%) and 1% of women 15 to 24 years of age. Correspondingly, younger women were more likely to be giving birth to their first child in 2016; 67.1% (63.7%, 70.3%) of mothers 15-24 years of age were giving birth for the first time.
