In 2011 (Jan.-Apr.), 320 randomly selected adults (18+) in Simcoe Muskoka were asked questions about the quality of the outdoor air in their community as part of the Rapid Risk Factor Surveillance System (RRFSS) survey. According to this survey, approximately one-third (35% (29.4%, 41.1%)) of respondents said the air quality in Simcoe Muskoka was very good and another 62% (55.5%, 67.3%) said it was good. When asked how the air quality in Simcoe Muskoka has been over the past five years, approximately half (47% (40.9%, 52.8%)) said it had improved or stayed the same and one-quarter (25% (20.2%, 30.2%)) said that it had gotten worse.
Those living in urban areas in Simcoe Muskoka (i.e. Barrie, Orillia, Collingwood & Midland) perceived the air quality to be slightly worse than those in rural areas (i.e. all other Municipalities); however these differences were not statistically significant. No differences were observed for the five year trend in air quality between those living in urban or rural areas in Simcoe Muskoka.
