Hospital Syndromic Reports

Since 2010, four hospitals in the health unit catchment area have been participating in a real time syndromic surveillance system called Emergency Department Syndromic Surveillance (EDSS). The system receives ED data in real-time from hospital databases and classifies the data into seven infectious syndrome categories based on chief complaint. The health unit monitors these data routinely and disseminates results back to hospitals via these reports. A newer system called Acute Care Enhanced Surveillance was implemented in 2015 that has many more infectious and also non-infectious syndromes such as injuries, diabetes and mental health.
