This section of HealthSTATS presents key demographic information for Simcoe County and the District of Muskoka. The source for this information is the 2006 and 2001 Census data by Statistics Canada, which includes population statistics, socioeconomic indicators and cultural characteristics. Highlights of Simcoe Muskoka demographic data include: 

  • In 2006, 479,767 people lived in the service area of the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit, including 422,204 people in Simcoe County and 57,563 in the District of Muskoka.
  • Between 2001 and 2006, the population of Simcoe and Muskoka grew faster than the province as a whole.
  • From 2007 to 2016, the population in the service area of the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit is expected to increase by 18% to nearly 600,000 residents.
  • In both Simcoe and Muskoka, the senior population (65+ years of age) is projected to represent a growing proportion of the overall population by 2031, while other age groups will represent a decreased proportion of the population.
  • The percentage of families with children living at home that are led by single parents increased in Simcoe Muskoka between 2001 and 2006.
  • Five per cent of families in Simcoe County and 4% in Muskoka District are classified as low income.
  • The unemployment rate of those aged 15 and older decreased in Simcoe Muskoka between 2001 and 2006.
  • Five out of every 10 adults ages 20 and over in Simcoe Muskoka had completed some form of postsecondary education in 2006.
  • In 2006, the majority (85%) of the immigrant population living in Simcoe Muskoka reported that they were second or third generation immigrants.
